Lake Pahoja Recreational Area is a 282-acre, highly developed, multi-use recreation area offering a wide variety of activities centered around its 72-acre lake. A 4-mile hard surface walking and biking trail circles the lake and 81 campsites with electrical hookups and modern comfort stations are available. A swimming beach, playgrounds, picnic shelters and handicap fishing pier round out the amenities. Open year round.

The Larchwood City Park is located on Holder Street/Highway 9 between Rulland and Williams Streets.

The park has a large and small open shelter house with electricity and grills and one enclosed shelter house with electricity, hot water and a refrigerator. To reserve the enclosed shelter house please call the City Clerk at 477-2366.

The City is very proud of their park. The Jesse Fell Walkway is a great place to take a walk or ride your bike through the European Larch and Catalpa Trees. The park is beautifully landscaped and also offers a playground, tennis/basketball court, volleyball, soccer and baseball area.

The "Best Four Days of Summer" will be during the annual Lyon County Fair in July. Grandstand shows include the Miss Lyon County Fair Queen, tractor pulls, sprint and stock car racing and Figure 8 racing. The fairgrounds are filled with a carnival, commercial exhibits and great food.

The four-day event attracts youth and adults from throughout the county to show off their talent in the 4-H and open class exhibits and 4-H and FFA livestock shows. Members and friends of the Lyon County Historical Society bring history to life with displays and demonstrations of the historic Round Barn during the fair.

There is free admission to the grounds, free parking and free entertainment during the Best Four Days of Summer!

Fair dates for 2012 are July 22-26.

In the complex visitors will find a former Rock Island Depot, which has been renovated, and a caboose. The Society recently constructed an example of an old-fashioned livery stable area. A victorian home has been completely renovated and furnished with artifacts of the period. Also, one will find a windmill.

The Society has a school house and teacher's house at nearby Lake Pahoja Recreational Area.

Hours: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and holidays, or by appointment, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Meadow Acres is a fun 9 hole regulation course located at the Meadow Acres Golf Club facility in Larchwood, IA. From the longest tees it presents 2,959 yards of golf for a par of 36. The course rating is 34.2 with a slope rating of 113. Meadow Acres is a daily fee golf course with a "Open To Public" guest policy.

The 9-hole "Otter Valley" course at the Otter Valley Country Club facility in George, Iowa features 3,186 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36 . The course rating is 43.0 and it has a slope rating of 115 on Other grass. Designed by Mark Johnson, the Otter Valley golf course opened in 1973. Norma Rokusek manages the course as the General Manager.

Racing is a tradition in Rock Rapids. While the competition has evolved from horses to horse-power throughout the decades, when weather heats up, so does Rapid Speedway.

Every Friday night during the summer, stock, modified and sprint cars take to the 3/8 mile semi-banked oval dirt track to take home the hardware. With a racing surface that is 80 feet wide, this place breeds three-way racing!

The racetrack is located on the Lyon County Fairgrounds and spectators have the advantage of watching the show from the county's historic covered grandstand.

Heartland Racing Association promotes the fast-paced action. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. with the green flag dropping at 8:00 p.m.

Directions to the Lyon County Fair Grounds: From Hwy 9 - turn on Tama Street and go South 3 blocks. From Hwy 75 - turn on South 5th Avenue and go 8 blocks east. You will run right into the fair grounds.

The Rock Rapids Gun Club has a long and rich history in the community. There are spring and fall trap shooting leagues and special clay events with shooters of all ages.

The club has four trap houses and a skeet range. League shooting is held on Wednesday nights. There is open shooting Sunday afternoons from 1-5:00 p.m. for trap and skeet.

Members sponsor hunter safety classes and host fund-raising events such as membership and fun nights and wild game feeds to support community activities.

The Rock River Golf and Country Club, located two miles north of Junctions 9 and 75 in Rock Rapids on county blacktop Harding Avenue, gains its name from the Rock River which flows directly through a portion of the course. The river comes directly into play as golfers are forced to drive across the stream to greens on the fourth and sixth holes.

Rock River is a great 9 hole regulation course located a the Rock River Golf & Country Club facility in Rock Rapids, IA. From the longest tees it presents 2,737 yards of golf for a par of 35.

The course rating is 33.5 with a slope rating of 101. Rock River is a daily fee golf course with a "Accompanied By Member" policy.
